Research Question Ideas

I have been planning this for a week now and here I am again, now putting it on my blog
What I am thinking/planning to be my research question for this year?

I have planned some ideas on paper but now it is time for the blog

Number 1: 3D Based Reference for 2D

Project

Creating a 2D finished scene of a '3D' spin of the 2D animatied character, using the technique of referencing/ rotoscoping over top a 3D reference video, created in Maya.

Experiments I could do involving this technique

Within this scene, I could add 2D animated 'magic' to swirl around the 2D animated character and the 3D referenced room (that is cleaned and detail added in 2D).

Within this scene, I could practice with light effects hitting both on the 2D animated character and also the light ray's missing them, going past them (also creating a light flare to occur).

Within this scene, I could create different 3D referenced scenes, one in a room, one in a field (grass??), one on a building top, one on a bridge, etc. The 2D animated character is the same, but different backgrounds added.

Within this scene, I could create an age transition between the 2D animated character younger but then (within the spin) to their older self.

Who could I use an inspiration for this technique?

New movie Klaus (the letter flying over scene)
Steven Universe (Steven's spin/ Pearl's spin)
Penguin Highway (facing down the street scene)

What would I gain from this research question?

More animation practice in both 3D and 2D (like using both)
Using referencing to my advantage (not coping)
Great background art practice (proportion keeping too)
Lots to practice/play around with (maybe to much)
A great finial product (I have one now)
A current interest of mine (I would work lots on it)

Possible question I could have for this project?

Could the techniques of rotoscoping be used on a 3D based reference layer, as a bases of improving proportions and animation smoothness in 2D?

Can 3D be used as a tool for 2D animation? (too simple...)

Could the finial outcome of 2D animation be improved by using rotoscoping techniques over a 3D base reference layer for a 2D background animation during a 360 degree spin animation around a 2D single character?

Number 2: What wins, happy or sad endings?

Project

An animatic/ animation (depending on when this project is due) of a short story that differences in only either in a sad or happy ending. Which ending would people prefer? And which ending gave them for emotions?

Sad but more fulfilling
Happy plot-twist

Experiments I could do involving this technique

Changing the story only by 1 scene to create the happy of sad ending, giving people the same heart wrenching pain within both videos, only one resolves it suddenly (plot twist when most thing they know whats going on)

Editing the colour to set the mood of the scene a lot more than the words themselves

With it being only 1 scene difference, I could get away with creating both, but which would people want more and why

Creating a very simple questionnaire of which ending people prefer and why that is so (everyone is different so this will be fun) (I can expect debate for which is the best ending)

To see if I can catch peoples hearts and give them both warm fuzzies for the cute times and pain/heart throbs in the sad times (I like toying with peoples feelings/reactions). Does the cute times add more pain when the sad time comes?

Who could I use an inspiration for this technique?

Wolf children (before and after fathers death)
The reaction of the people I show (fun times)
Violet Evergarden (I have heard its music, but have never watched it)

What would I gain from this research question?

More experience in story telling and what the people really want(I want to improve on it more)
Developing my own style more (in story telling)
Playing with peoples feelings (I like seeing the reactions)
I could animate a part of it (animation practice)
It will be fun to see the reaction of people (I really do enjoy it)

Possible question I could have for this project?

What story ending is truly more popular? A happy or sad ending?

Can I get a true response to which story ending to an animatic I have created is more enjoyable/gave more emotion to the viewer (Happy or Sad endings)?

Would I get a varied response to whether a happy or sad ending is more enjoyable for the viewer?

Does a sad ending to an animatic I have created give more emotions/reaction from the viewer than a happy ending, and which is considered 'better' and why?

Number 3: Outfit of Choice, a Story in itself

Project

A series of concept art or short animation of a single character in one set location, wearing many different outfits, purely to indicate a story within the image and outfit alike.

Experiments I could do involving this technique

Changing the outfits that are either conventional or unconventional to the scene the character is set in, character in formal in a field, character in rages in a field (examples)

Practicing many different outfits all at once, baggy clothing, fitted clothing

Different poses for different outfits (only if I want)

Changing/Choosing the right scene to place the character into (on a building, in a field, on a bridge, in a room, etc)

Who could I use an inspiration for this technique?

Ummmm. Will look more into it soon

What would I gain from this research question?

More experience in concept art (lots of drawing)
More experience in drawing a large range of clothing (lots of clothing choices, hair to maybe)
I could animate a part of it (animation practice)

Seeing if different stories can be seen from it (the reaction of people/ what they think)
Developing my own style more (in concept art)

Possible question I could have for this project?

Can the clothing choice of a single 2D character in a simplified scene demonstrate or display some sort of story/backstory to why the character is wearing that outfit in that scene?

Can I create a series of different story/background stories with reusing a 2D character but wearing different outfits as the method to show a different story/backstory?

Comments

  1. I like the first option of using character spins to develop specific technical skills. The happy/sad storylines in number 2 you've already played with in 103. The changing outfits one is pretty limited.
How about a storyline development? Create a scene/trailer/ et to a high level, maybe using some of the ideas above as foci but creating an end product you can use for your showreel.
    Hope this helps. Cheers Bex
