Today, we are looking at the differences between Theoretical text and Technique text

Also how to Evaluate Articles

I forgot to create a blog post about this last week, but when we were given the task to get the books, I got the ones I thought could have some relevant information for my research question/project. I got the citations I thought were really great and relevant

Here they are
(with the other basic info about what the book is for APA referencing later)
Book 1
“John Lasseter once remarked of computer animation that the ‘term CGI is a misnomer – the computer doesn’t generate the images. That would be like calling traditional animation Pencil-Generated Imagery. No matter what the tool is, it requires an artist to create art’.” (p. 156)
  • Storyboarding A Critical History
  • Chris Pallant, Steven Price
  • Palgrave Studies in Screenwriting
  • MacMillan Publishers Limited
  • 2015
  • Hampshire, UK

Book 2
“As we enter the twenty-first century, the growing presence of computer science, electronic imaging and telecommunications is producing profound changes in our cultural environment. These changes in turn are affecting our perception of the world and our methods of artistic expression. Recognizing the importance of this technological revolution and its immense potential, a new breed of innovative animators is redefining the fundamentals of motion graphics...” (p. 9)
  • Hyperanimation Digital images and virtual worlds
  • Robert Russett
  • 2009
  • John Liberty Publishing
  • Herts UK

Now in class, I must find more theoretical text for my work using the library catalog (or other resources)
Image result for resources
  • Animation Studies is a great resource
  • SCMS is another one for media of journals
  • Alphaville has some podcasts
  • Film Journal is an open access resource
  • The University of ___. Look at the journals/new books like University of The Sydney's journals
  • ResearchState is something I can create a link for free
OK, I have used Animation Studies to find an interesting article called 'Death of the Animator, or The Felicity of Felix, Part II'

A good read. Here is the quote that got my attention

"So for animation studies, the animator would be the very essence of the author. And why not, since to author, from the Latin auctor, meaning creator, is a term of animation! The animator would be the author of the author, the auteur of the auteur – not only the master and commander, the ruler/controller, of all within his dominion but its absolute creator, a figure fashioned in the mold of God himself, creator/animator of the universe and all within. In such a divine light, the human animator is envisioned as supreme human being, individual, master, who gives birth to worlds, to universes, made to his measure – Romantic and existential hero, humanist individual, pure origin, pure punctual source, pure unified subject, pure subjectivity, pure intentionality, pure autonomy, par excellence; and what he engenders, what he originates – thanks to frame by frame construction, that modality that animation theorists claim as what uniquely defines animation – is his total, pure creation."

Good quote. It is interesting to me and it finds meaning to my project, as I am a creator myself with my own work

I do wonder if the author has the right sort of 'authority' or has real research behind his writings. He has the resources behind him, but it does not list his authority or where he has come from (Had he been in the work place? Is he well known? Etc)

I was looking at the publisher, not the author. So, I was wrong, he might have some authority to his name

I am now going to look more into critically evaluating the author and its teachings

To judge the author's credibility

Is the author identified?
-Timo Linsenmaier posted the article-
-The copyright is to Alan Cholodenko, in 2007-
-Alan Cholodenko was a senior lecturer in the Department of Art History and Theory at the University of Sydney before he retired in 2001. He is the editor of The Illusion of Life: Essays on Animation and other books-
-So I can rely on Alan as the author, not Timo-

The date it was published?
-Posted on December 9 2007-
-Published on the website Animation Studies-

Is the Website a reliable one?
-Animation Studies was one of the websites that my tutor suggested, so it is a good resource for me to use-
